ESSENTIAL OILS

INTRODUCTION TO ESSENTIAL OILS

The raw materials in aromatherapy are called "essential oils". These essences are naturally occurring substances found in plants and contain the concentrated power of its vital life force. It contains the therapeutic properties and the perfume of the plant. It is thought that the "life Force" of the plant is contained in the essential oil. Each oil has a different affect on the body.

Aromatic plants and infused oils made from them have been used for thousands of years in both medicines- and cosmetics. The medicinal use of herbs has been extensive during centuries and certain plants were found to be poisonous. However, virtually none of the classic poisonous herbs are aromatic.

Although synthetically produced substances are now increasingly utilised in both food flavours and perfumes. Essential oils are now possibly being used in greater volume than at any previous time in history.

Interest in the therapeutic applications of essential oils has seen an upsurge in the past 20 years or so, and with an ever increasing interest in 'natural' forms of medicine, essential oils are now being used by many different kinds of therapists and doctors.

However, just as there are poisonous herbs, such as hemlock and belladonna, there are also toxic essential oils (see list of banned oils and contraindications of oils). Because essential oils are natural substances this does not automatically guarantee their safety. Some 10-15% of all essential oils are hazardous in some way. However, the remaining 85-90% are quite safe to use.

Many of the essential oils used in aromatherapy have been employed medicinally in the form of the whole plant for thousands of years. Essential oils are, on average, 70 times more concentrated than the herbs from which they are extracted. Because of this concentration certain properties become very much more pronounced. Essential oils, for example, have very strong bactericidal properties which are barely evident when the whole plant, or its extract are used. The essences also demonstrate a greater activity both on the skin, and on the emotions, than do herbal preparations. Sometimes the extraction of the essential oil also has the effect of potentiating toxicity, or irritation, or some other hazard. A herb can be safe to use, but its essential oil may not be.

Certain plant essences have been in use for centuries. Oils of cedarwood, bay, rose, lavender, cinnamon, frankincense, juniper, mastic have all been in use for over 500 years. We can at least rest assured that the therapeutic use of essential oils will not give rise to some strange new side effects. We are not dealing here with new, synthetic chemicals, but with organic substances, many of which are used every day in kitchens throughout the world in the form of herbs and spices. Problems only arise at all because the quantities of essential oil used in aromatherapy are somewhat higher than those occurring in nature.

We do not sell sandalwood or rosewood due to the adverse environmental impact of harvesting these oils.

DEFINITION OF ESSENTIAL OIL

An essential oil is a fragrant, volatile liquid extracted by distillation from a single botanical source. In the case of citrus fruits the essential oil may also be obtained by means of expression.

Aromatherapy Creams

GALBANUM FOR ARTHRITIS £5.50

Galbanum is a plant grown in northern Iran, Turkey and Afghanistan and has a multitude of therapeutic uses: coughs, bronchial spasm, muscular aches and pains, poor circulation, stomach infections and is also helpful for nervous conditions. However I have found it to be particularly effective in providing pain relief from arthritis and rheumatic pain. It has no side effects and helps reduce pain and increase mobility from these debilitating conditions.

CHAMOMILE FOR ECZEMA £4.50

Chamomile is a wonderfully soothing oil and is used for stress, both mental and physical. It helps with stomach conditions, PMT, muscular aches and is a fantastic oil for many skin conditions- acne, psoriasis, burns, blisters, boils, allergies etc, but is particularly effective on eczema. I made some for my baby son when he had eczema and it cleared the condition in a very short time. In general it is a very safe oil but I would not recommend it for use on pregnant women.

AMBER HEALING TREATMENTS

Holistic treatments look at the whole body rather than just the individual symptoms. They work with the body, rather than against it as many conventional treatments do, in order for it to be healed.  They are natural and non-invasive, and induce a deep feeling of relaxation. The major benefit of massage is stress relief. We all feel stress one way or another in our lives - this can lead to many physical illnesses as well as mental conditions. Cancer and heart conditions are often associated with stressful lifestyles.

Massage also improves blood and lymphatic circulation, induces a feeling of well being and an improvement in sleep patterns, detoxifies the body, and also improves muscle tone.

Any of the following treatments will help alleviate stress but they also have individual benefits.

Aromatherapy

This can be a full body or a back, shoulder and neck massage using an individual blend of essential oils. It is great for relieving muscular aches and pains and arthritis. It can help breathing problems, headaches, blood pressure and many other conditions.

Reflexology

This can be performed on the hands or, more usually, the feet and is based on the principles of acupuncture but without the needles!  I have found it to be very effective in treating menstrual problems, sinusitis and insomnia. It is also good for headaches, back complaints, regulating blood pressure and many other conditions.

Indian Head Massage

This massage can be performed with or without oil and covers the head, neck, shoulders arms and face. I have found this to be the most powerful of all of the treatments against stress and depression. The massage is very eff
